New Year's Resolutions for Law Applicants

If I were a law school applicant, these would be my New Year's Resolutions:

1. I will not judge my worth as a person by my LSAT score.

2. I will not judge my worth as a person by the law schools that choose to admit me.

3. I will continue to do everything in my power to craft professional, mature, careful and well-reasoned communications with the law schools that I hope to attend.

4. I will try to be a well-rounded person and learn new things about the world, whether or not those things are law related.

5. I will work to keep things in perspective and make time for the people who matter most to me.

These are the values I hope to instill in those of you applying to law school.

Personally, here are my New Year's Resolutions: To love my husband and daughters the best I can, to put forward my best advice and efforts in assisting law school applicants in reaching their goals, to get to the gym three times a week instead of just two, and to make time to pick up my knitting needles again (which will, in turn, hopefully keep my fingers from on-line shopping).

No matter your resolutions this year, I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors. May this be a year of fresh starts and exciting challenges for all of my law school applicant and pre-law candidate readers.

  1. This is wonderful. I'm waiting to hear back on applications for Fall 08 right now. This perfectly summarizes everything my boyfriend, who is a third-year law student, has tried to tell me throughout the application process. I should post it on my bathroom mirror! Also, thank you so much for writing this blog - I love it, and it's the perfect antidote to all the negative advice I get from friends from undergrad who go to top-35 and 14 law schools. I have a 158 LSAT and am trying to go to my state school, which is cost-effective and well respected in my region. When I came across your blog I'd already made that decision, but it definitely bolstered my resolve and reaffirmed that I'm not crazy. Thank you again!

  3. Thanks so much for this--I'm starting to get too worked up and in a tizzy over my February LSATs--I'm applying for Fall of '10 and want to get everything ready as early as I can. I've been making 168-174s on my practices thus far, so I'm afraid I'm riding some kind of high and I have to hit the wave while I'm on it or something. I dunno.

This helped me to step back and calm down a good bit, and not get quite so worked up. :) I've been reading your blog for awhile, and it's tremendously helpful!

Happy New Year and best of luck in '09!

  4. Thanks so much for reposting this, Ann. :) I've been reading your blog for awhile, and it's been tremendously helpful in keeping my perspective. I've been working myself up into a tizzy about my February LSATs (applying in Fall of '10, so doing things a bit early) because my practices have been surprisingly high (168-175), and I kind of want to "ride the wave" while I'm on it. Unfortunately, I think I may have gotten caught up too much, and it's nice to have a reminder to just calm things down and relax a little bit. :P

Thanks again, and great luck in 2009!

  5. Thanks so much for reposting this, Ann. :) I've been getting in a tizzy here at the beginning of the year about my February LSATs (applying for Fall 2010, so early, not late), because my scores have been pleasantly high in practices (168-175.) I'm afraid of taking them later for the first time because I feel like I'm some sort of a wave, but I think I'm getting caught up too much in all of it. It's nice to have a reminder to just relax and calm down and keep the first things first in life. :)

Thanks again for reposting it, and best of luck to you and yours in 2009!
